8th June 2019

After breakfast drive to the dockyard though the main gate into the inner courtyard.

Chatham Dockyard 13km from the main hotel was a Royal Navy Dockyard located on the River Medway in Kent. Established in Chatham in the mid-16th century, the dockyard subsequently expanded into neighbouring Gillingham (at its most extensive, in the early 20th century, two-thirds of the dockyard lay in Gillingham, one-third in Chatham). It came into existence at the time when, following the Reformation, relations with the Catholic countries of Europe had worsened, leading to a requirement for additional defences. For 414 years Chatham Royal Dockyard provided over 500 ships for the Royal Navy, and was at the forefront of shipbuilding, industrial and architectural technology. At its height, it employed over 10,000 skilled artisans and covered 400 acres (1.6 km²). Chatham dockyard closed in 1984, and 84 acres (340,000 m2) of the Georgian dockyard is open for us to see and explore, from rope making to boarding a submarine.

We return to the Premier Inn for an evening group meal that takes place in the Beefeater restaurant next to the hotel by the river Medway. There is a bar inside and outside by the river.

9th June 2019

Drive from the hotel in Maidstone to Leeds Castle and Discover almost 900 years of history and explore 500 acres of beautiful parkland and gardens at "the loveliest Castle in the world". From here it is only 60km back to Dover, or why not stay longer and visit other places in England.

I have arranged special group prices for our visits there is lots to do and a variety of places to eat in the Dockyard and Castle.
